Guidelines developed by Cornell University for cleaning bed bugs recommend thorough vacuuming after a room is stripped of all personal belongings. A vacuum with extractor level of power is necessary to suck up bugs and their sticky eggs. The mattress and box spring must be vacuumed. All crevices on and around the bed, including baseboards, molding, nail holes, wall paper, heating vents, and carpet edges should be cleaned with the vacuum's crevice tool attachment using a scraping motion. A
beater bar nozzle
is also recommended for cleaning carpets.
